Even a heavy, mid-concert downpour couldn’t dampen spirits at Thursday night’s Grandstand concert at the Iowa State Fair.

Thoughts of the impending school year were forgotten as a crowd of 4,613 kids and parents swayed to the sounds of Vanessa Hudgens and Corbin Bleu. The only reminders of buses and backpacks were the “High School Musical” stars tearing up the stage.

Just a few numbers into Hudgens’ set, the darkening sky gave way to windy rain showers. The concert stopped midway, but the crowd kept going, shouting “Vanessa,” hoping she would come back onstage. A group of diehard fans weathered the chilly storm and huddled around the stage. Backup dancers entertained in the interim, and then, sure enough, she returned. Just like she sang: “Never Underestimate a Girl.”
